In the middle of the Swan River, at the eastern gateway to the City of Perth, sits one of the little known jewels of Western Australia - Heirisson Island.
To create a sculpture park of international standing, areas of Heirisson Island will need to be redeveloped to suit the needs of thousands of visitors each year. While the aim is to keep the changes on the Island to a minimum, a holistic approach to landscape design will be required to create suitable spaces to display the sculptures.
Among the infrastructure plans are a footbridge linking the Island to the adjacent Perth foreshore and the parking areas at Point Fraser. Also required will be a visitors/ education centre infrastructure for visitors arriving by ferries and other public transport, new footpaths, lighting, signage, security, rest areas and toilets.
Other proposals for the sculpture park include an amphitheatre/earth sculpture and a heritage centre focussing on indigenous and European history and connections to the Island.
