The Heirisson Island Sculpture Park is the vision of a group of
private individuals who are seeking to establish a major outdoor
arts attraction for residents and visitors to Perth. It will
exhibit international standard outdoor sculpture and be a place of
delicate environmental detail, as well as interpretation and
celebration of Indigenous heritage.
Heirisson Island Sculpture Park Inc. was established in 2001 to
act as a catalyst to progress the sculpture park concept. The
group's overall vision for a sculpture park is now supported by the
City of Perth via its 2008 Master Plan for the Island.
Heirisson Island Sculpture Park Inc. believes a sculpture park
on Heirisson Island will:
- Create a major tourist attraction in the heart of the city
- Create a 'landmark entrance' or 'gateway' to the City of
Perth
- Focus the national and international arts community's attention
on Perth
- Give Western Australians exposure to important international
sculptors
- Create educational opportunities
- Define indigenous and other interests in the history of the
Island
- Attract publicity and promotion for Perth, nationally and
internationally
- Rejuvenate an under-utilised part of the city and river
- Provide a community focus for the redevelopments taking place
at the eastern end of the city
- Link different areas of activity around the river foreshore as
it sits halfway between South Perth and East Perth and adjacent to
the Burswood Entertainment Complex
- Create an appropriate long-term sustainable use for Heirisson
Island
- Protect the unique ecology of the island's environment
